Top Ten Tips for Running with Your Dog

Running with your dog is the perfect way to keep you and your companion fit, as well as being a great way to spend quality time together. The following tips are designed to help you get the most out of running with your dog:

Get a health check

You should take your dog to the vets for a health check before it goes out on its first run. Some dog breeds make better runners than others, so it is important to know your dog’s capabilities. You will also need to ensure that your dog has a licence and is up to date with all its vaccinations.

Socialize your dog

You will need to be able to trust your dog while it is out running with you. Your companion should be able to run obediently by your side and readily accept strangers and other animals.

Be a responsible dog owner

it is important to obey any rules whilst out running, such as keeping to specific routes in public parks and cleaning up after your dog.

Build up slowly

It is best to start off slowly and build up your dog’s stamina. Small dog breeds can start running at around six months of age, but larger breeds should not run until they are about a year old.

Keep your dog hydrated

Carry plenty of fresh water with you whilst out running, particularly during hot weather.

Keep your dog on a leash

Keeping your dog on a leash will ensure that your companion stays safely by your side at all times.

Use a harness

A harness is much better than a collar, as it distributes the weight across the dog’s body rather than putting pressure on the neck.

Avoid hazards

Hot surfaces, glass and sharp stones can be harmful to your dog’s paws, so your dog may benefit from wearing dog boots. Reflective dog vests are also a good idea if you take your dog out in the dark.

Carry a few treats

Treats are a great way to reward good behavior.

Keep an eye on your dog

It is important to stop and take a break if your dog starts slowing down and panting heavily. Once your dog has become accustomed to your running routine, you will probably find it waiting eagerly by the door whenever it is time to go out!

Hi, I’m Kevin Bentley, a dog lover and enthusiast. Though I started out as a cat person, my wife quickly set me on the true path of dog love. Now I’m full-on obsessed with dogs and everything related to dogs. I’ve purchased every dog accessory you can think of, so I decided to collect my thoughts about them on this site.
